Mountain Biking Returns to Sakarya
After staging a very successful championship last year, Sakarya is set to host two important events on 30 July and 1 August.
International Cycling Union (UCI) accommodates the two events to take place at the Sunflower Bike Valley on its 2021 calendar. Sakarya Mountain Bike Cup will kick off with the women’s race at 10:00 on Friday morning, July the 30th. The start time for the male bikers is 14:00. The women participants will pedal 28.1km while the men cover 37.1km in the event that is labelled as HC (Hors Class - beyond categorization), the most difficult type of climb in any race. Sakarya Mountain Bike Cup is classified by UCI as “XCO” (Cross-Country Olympic), the only cross-country discipline in the Olympics programme.
The Sakarya round of the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon Series will be held on Sunday 1st of August. Men will step out on the race course at 09:00 to ride 110km. Women will follow at 09:30 and race over a distance of 80.9km. The race is of great significance since it offers top 20 men and women a qualification for the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships.
Sakarya Sunflower Bike Valley hosted the Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships, one of the foremost global events in mountain bike racing, last year. The multinational Depar Timing team who provided the timing services at the successful event will be on duty again on 30 July and 1 August.

Towards the 33rd Year At the Bosphorus
Time to start the countdown for the swimmers! 33rd Samsung Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race will be held on 22 August.
The race, annually staged by the Turkish Olympic Committee since 1989, will gather once again 2400 swimmers which half of them are non-Turkish citizens. The applications for the international swimmers had been filled by 56 countries within hours when it opened on 1 February. Russian swimmers who show a great interest to the event every year reached their country quota in only 6 minutes and 20 seconds while the quota for Ukraine was filled in 30 minutes. The 1200 swimmers from Turkey went through a selection process which was staged in several cities.
The participants will enter the water in Kanlıca on the Asian side of Istanbul at 10:00 on 22 August and attempt to crossing to the European side where the finish area is located in Kuruçeşme Cemil Topuzlu Park. Depar Timing will provide the timing services for the 6.5km event.

Pogacar Defends Tour Title
Tadej Pogacar claimed his second Tour de France title in a row. The 23-year-old Slovenian cyclist won three stages on the way.
The new cycling star pulled ahead in the general classification standings after the eighth stage and never gave up the yellow jersey afterwards, winning three of the 21 stages. Besides his overall triumph, the rider of Team Bahrain Victorius also won the awards for the “Best Cyclist Under-25” and the “King of the Mountains” polka dot jersey, a triple he also achieved on his debut last year.
Team Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider Mark Cavendish topped the points classification of this year’s Tour de France where he won four stages. The 36-year-old Briton reached a total of 34 Tour de France stage wins in his career, matching the record set between 1969 and 1975 by Eddy Merckx, who is considered the greatest cyclist of all time.
In the Tour starting on the 26th of June and finishing on the 18th of July, Bahrain Victorious (Bahrain) won the team classification, with EF Education-Nippo (USA) second and Jumba-Visma (Netherlands) in the third position.

Return To Open Waters
After a year of interruption, International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championships will be back to Marmaris on May the 28th.
The event that could not be held in 2020 due to the pandemic is gathering the swimmers of all ages in Marmaris for its twelfth edition. The races will kick off with the Peugeot Open Water Swimming Championship at a distance of 3008m and the Martı Hotels Open Water Swimming Championship over 6km in the morning. The afternoon programme includes shorter races, the Setur Marinas Open Water Swimming Championship of 1km and the Peugeot Open Water Swimming Championship of 2008m. The daylong activities will conclude by the night swimming event, Işık Üniversitesi Journey of Light.
International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championships introduce also a new performance category this year. The swimmers participating in Marmaris as well as the subsequent stages in Göcek and Bodrum will score and be eligible for special prizes in the Turquoise Swimming Series.
Timing services at the 12th International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championships will be provided by Depar Timing. Detailed information on the event is accessible on the website at www.aquamasters.org.

İzmir Seeking Bronze
Marathon İzmir will stage its second edition on 11 April. The race will be under inspection for World Athletics Bronze Label.
Having been organised in October last year due to the pandemic, the first marathon of İzmir is getting prepared to host the road runners again on the second Sunday of April, that is intended to be the traditional date. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, the organiser of the event, applied to the World Athletics in an attempt to elevate the marathon to a prestigious status in the international calendar. A World Athletics Technical Delegate will be on site on 11 April to observe the event in respect of the WA Bronze Label. Should the race meet the various World Athletics criteria from timing services to medical measures, Marathon İzmir would be the fourth event in Turkey granted a WA Road Race Label after Istanbul Marathon, Istanbul Half Marathon and Mersin Marathon.
Entries for the Marathon İzmir will be processed at www.maratonizmir.org until the 4th of April unless the quota is reached sooner. The registration for the side event 10km was closed earlier.
Timing services in İzmir will be provided by Depar Timing this year. Depar Timing had contributed to İstanbul and Mersin marathons in obtaining their first World Athletics (then IAAF) Road Race Labels as the timing services provider.
Due to the cancellation of several races in 2020 and the uncertainty with many events in 2021, World Athletics switched to “Label”, “Elite Label” and “Platinum Label” categories this year, but is expected to go back to the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum classification from next year on.
