Women In Majority at Caretta Run’s 5Km
172 female runners finished the 5km race at the Caretta Run whereas the male finishers were 94, a ratio that has never been recorded in Turkey before.
The event in Dalyan welcomed 5km, 14km and half marathon runners. Muğla’s unspoilt and picturesque town attracted nearly 300 participants in the 5km race. The fact that 65 per cent of the finishers were women placed the race on top of the statistics regarding the gender ratio in mixed running events in Turkey. Men have a significant predominance in numbers in races where men and women participate together throughout the world.
It was not only the participation figures but also the performances of the women what was outstanding in the Caretta Run’s 5km. The 18-year old winner Peri Su özgen crossed the finish line in fourth place overall with a time of 22:28. Women’s runner up Gönül Babayiğit İrez, a former international athlete, was seventh overall in 23:28 following Özgen and five male competitors.
Caretta Run organisers offered some ancillary activities for the participants to enjoy their time in Dalyan. The awards ceremony at 18:00 on Saturday, 28 October was followed by an After Run Party that evening. At 09:00 on Sunday, the participants met in the Dalyan Republic Square and left for the “Morning Yoga Session” at Iztuzu Beach, worldwide known as the Turtle Beach.
