Chicago Celebrates 40th Anniversary
Countryman Galen Rupp and Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba took the honours at the 40th edition of the Chicago Marathon. The winning times are 2:09:20 and 2:18:31 respectively.
First staged in 1977, Chicago Marathon had attracted a field of more than 4,200 runners, making it the largest marathon in the world at the time. It was one of the special editions of the event on 8 October 2017. Galen Rupp, who managed to pull away from his African rivals, became the first US man since Khalid Khannouchi in 2002 to take the victory. The 31-year old marathoner from Portland finished in 2:09:20. Kenyan Abel Kirui, one of the pre-race favourites, followed in 2:09:48. Another Kenyan Bernard Kipyego arrived in a time of 2:10:23 getting the third place.
On the women’s side, Tirunesh Dibaba, current 5000m world record holder who has a brilliant track career with six global track titles and three Olympic gold medals, dominated the race to win in 2:18:31. Second was the Kenyan Brigid Kosgei finishing in 2:20:22. Jordan Hasay of USA ran a personal best of 2:20:57 in the second marathon of her career to finish in third place.
